Zelenskyy Urges Expanded Air Defense Support After NATO Talks in Kyiv
Zelenskyy said the Ukraine–NATO Council convened during the visit, with allied representatives reaffirming continued support for Ukraine. He described the discussions as sending a clear signal in favor of expanding defensive capabilities, particularly in countering ballistic threats.
According to reports, participating countries also approved new contributions under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, with deliveries expected to begin in June. The mechanism allows NATO members to purchase military equipment for Ukraine from US stockpiles.
The Ukrainian president emphasized the importance of accelerating both external assistance and Europe’s own defense production capacity. He argued that European states already possess the industrial and technological resources needed to develop advanced missile and air defense systems independently.
Zelenskyy specifically thanked several countries, including France, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy, for their cooperation on air and missile defense initiatives.
He also noted ongoing preparations for an upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, where Ukraine is expected to participate. According to Zelenskyy, Kyiv hopes the meeting will produce concrete outcomes, including further steps to strengthen anti-ballistic defense capabilities.
